I’m a graduate in physics and psychology from Cambridge, turned IT consultant, turned writer wannabe.
My writing heroes are Vernor Vinge and Iain M. Banks.
Iain M. Banks studied primarily literature at university, and writes incredibly well. He meshes this with an awesome imagination to create stunning sci-fi.
Vernor Vinge was a professor of mathematics at San Diego university. He left this to become a professional writer. His knowledge of science and his scientific ideas are awesome, and very much parallel my own thoughts on how things will develop.
I became a wannabe-writer because I already read all of Iain M Banks’ books, Vernor Vinge’s books, and a bunch of other books – Neal Stephenson, Greg Bear, Asimov, Clarke, … – and ran out of books to read! Time to write my own…
My vision for the future is quite dark, not in the same way as Martin Rees (“Our Final Hour“), whose vision is fairly general, but specifically I am a strong believer in strong AI. I hope to bring ideas from this realm into my writing.
